Quick answer: Almost every big selling site requires sellers to be 18. Teens can usually sell only through an account a parent owns. Kids under 13 are shut out of nearly all of them.
| Site | Age to sell on your own | Teens 13 to 17 | Under 13 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy | 18 | Through a parent's shop | Not allowed |
| eBay | 18 | Through a parent's account | Not allowed |
| Amazon | 18 | Through a parent's account | Not allowed |
| Facebook Marketplace | 18 (treat it as 18) | Rules unclear, assume no | Not allowed |
| Depop | 13 to join | A parent may be needed for payouts | Not allowed |
| Vinted | 18 | Parent sets up and owns the account | Not allowed |
| TikTok Shop | 18 | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Lemonade Stand | Built for kids | Parent approves everything | Yes, with a parent |

Why the answer is almost always 18
Two reasons.
- Contracts. Selling means agreeing to terms, taking payments and handling taxes. Minors generally can't sign binding contracts, so platforms want an adult on the hook.
- COPPA. This U.S. law sets strict rules for any online service that collects information from kids under 13. Most sites simply ban young kids rather than build for them.
The parent-account workaround
On most of these sites, a teen can sell if a parent opens the account in the parent's name. It works, but know what it means:
- The account is yours. Your name, your bank account, your tax forms.
- You're responsible. For every listing, every message and every sale.
- Your kid has no login of their own. They make the product. You run the store.
We walk through exactly how that works on Etsy in Can a 13-year-old sell on Etsy with a parent?
Platform by platform
Etsy. 18 to own a shop. 13 to 17 can sell only through a shop a parent owns and supervises. Under 13 is not allowed at all. The full rules are in how old you have to be to sell on Etsy.
eBay. 18 to hold an account. There's no junior or supervised account, so a teen sells through a parent's account.
Amazon. 18 to open a seller account, and Amazon checks ID. Teens need a parent to hold the account.
Facebook Marketplace. Facebook's own rules on minors selling are unclear. The safe reading is 18 to sell. It's also a place where your kid would be messaging strangers, so it's a poor fit for young kids either way.
Depop. Depop says 13 is the minimum age to buy and sell. In practice, sellers under 18 may need a parent's details for identity checks and payouts.
Vinted. Built for adults. If someone under 18 wants to sell, a parent must set up the account in the parent's name and take responsibility for it.
TikTok Shop. 18, with age checks.
Where kids under 13 can sell
Offline: lemonade stands, kids' business fairs, craft markets and school events. They're great, but they happen a few times a year.
Online, the options are thin, because of COPPA. That's the gap we built Lemonade Stand for. Your kid gets their own store, their own login and their own orders. You approve every product, every order and every word before it goes live, and customer messages come to you, not your kid.
Frequently asked questions
Can kids sell online?
Yes, but rarely on their own. Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Vinted and TikTok Shop all require sellers to be 18. Teens can usually sell through an account a parent owns. Kids under 13 are barred from nearly all of them because of COPPA.
How old do you have to be to sell on eBay?
- eBay has no junior account, so a teen can only sell through an account a parent or guardian holds.
How old do you have to be to sell on Amazon?
- Amazon checks ID when you open a seller account. A teen needs a parent to hold the account.
Can a minor sell on Facebook Marketplace?
Treat it as no. Facebook's rules on minors selling are unclear, the safe reading is 18, and selling there means messaging strangers.
Can kids sell on Depop?
Depop says 13 is the minimum age to buy and sell. Sellers under 18 may need a parent's details for identity checks and payouts.
Where can kids under 13 sell online?
Very few places, because most sites ban kids under 13. Lemonade Stand is built for them: the kid runs their own store and a parent approves every product and order.
